Mark Francis Williams

Flower Head 2 in stages

Mark is an English artist who received his Masters in Painting and Drawing from Chelsea School of Art, London. He is currently based in Bucharest, Romania, where he has lived for the past eight years and which has also been a great source of inspiration in his work.

Williams uses techniques that are traditional, such as drawing, monoprinting and collage, in contemporary and often experimental ways to produce works that are beautiful and ethereal. They can be seen to remind us of the transient nature of life. For instance, his portraits seem to be worn by time, the vessels of memories and experiences, reflecting the beauty contained in a moment.

Similarly his work reflects life in his adopted city, which is now in a period of transition – from its former Soviet past to a future adopting Western capitalism. Shiny new buildings and shopping malls are beginning to appear as symbols of consumer culture, and yet it is in the view of the artist an illusion, a “deluded belief that we are at the end of history, that globalization and capitalism is the height of human endeavour.” In retort to this idea Williams revives the decaying architecture of the cities historic streets and buildings into his prints and drawings, channelling “their honesty and fractured beauty into his art”.
